Brynne’s Journey: From Bedside Nursing to Remote Nursing-A Tale of Resilience and Reinvention

By Nurse Sarah

Nurses are the unsung heroes, tirelessly dedicating themselves to the well-being of others. Among them, Brynne C., a Registered Nurse from New York, stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment and resilience that define the nursing profession.

Since 2011, Brynne has been a dedicated nurse, providing compassionate care at the bedside. However, she harbored a dream that had been brewing for nearly a decade – a dream of transitioning from traditional bedside nursing to a remote nursing career.

Little did she know that her journey would take an unexpected turn during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading her to question her value as a nurse and her place in the healthcare system.

This is the story of Brynne’s remarkable journey, a tale of transformation, adversity, and ultimately, finding her path through the guidance of an unexpected savior: Marie Peppers’ and her online course.

The Desire for Change:

Brynne’s longing for a change in her nursing career was not just a passing thought; it was a persistent desire that had grown over the course of nearly a decade.

Throughout her years as a dedicated nurse, she gained valuable experience and witnessed the intricacies of patient care up close. However, a sense of unfulfillment had gradually crept into her heart.

Brynne yearned for a new challenge, a different approach to nursing that would allow her to leverage her skills in a creative way. Despite her persistent efforts to seek out new avenues, she found herself repeatedly coming up short, ultimately leading her to remain compliant with bedside nursing which felt safe and familiar.

Turning Pain into Power: How Brynne’s Pain was the Catalyst for the Change She Desperately Needed

The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic threw a wrench in Brynne’s nursing career, one she never saw coming.

As healthcare institutions grappled with the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic, Brynne faced her own dilemma.

She harbored reservations about receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, driven by personal concerns and uncertainties. In New York, where she practiced, all non-vaccinated nurses were required to wear a different mask setup which made them identifiable as non-vaccinated employees.  This led her to feel singled out and discriminated against.

Her decision to decline the COVID-19 vaccine led to her social and mental demise.  She struggled with feeling scrutinized and devalued.  Brynne began to lose her enthusiasm for her job and experienced a growing sense of isolation within the workplace culture.  She experienced a profound sense of despair coupled with feelings of betrayal.

Instead of being recognized for her years of dedicated service, her value seemed to hinge solely on her vaccination status, causing her to question her place within the profession.

This turbulent period brought Brynne perilously close to abandoning her nursing career altogether, leaving her searching for a lifeline that would reignite her passion for healthcare.

“I thought about quitting nursing and getting a banking job!” Brynne said.  “That’s how bad it was.”

Brynne found herself at a breaking point that threatened the very core of her nursing career and her mental health.

Brynne said, “The emotional turmoil deteriorated my mental health and created so much stress and self-doubt.”

Reflecting on her journey, Brynne has experienced profound personal and professional growth since transitioning to remote nursing.

Notably, this transition had a positive impact on her overall health, both mentally and physically.

Brynne’s Advice to Nurses About Working Remote

When it comes to remote nursing, one valuable piece of advice Brynne gives for nurses is to treat your virtual workspace with the same professionalism and dedication you would in a physical office.

Still treat it like you are going into the office,” says Brynne.  “You are still expected to be professional, show up on time, and act like a nurse.  You can’t sit back and watch TV all day and not do your job.”

Brynne adds that remote nursing demands a strong foundation in communication and technology skills, and it’s crucial to leverage the expertise you’ve gained in traditional nursing settings.

As Brynne discovered through her own journey, learning by doing is often the most effective approach.

Brynne said, “Invest time in mastering programs like Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel; familiarize yourself with virtual skills such as screen-sharing and professional email etiquette.”

By applying skills from your traditional nursing background to your remote role, you can ensure a smooth and successful transition to remote nursing while maintaining the same high standards of professionalism and communication that are essential in healthcare.

Triumph Through Trials

Brynne’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

Her journey, which began with doubt and uncertainty, ultimately led her to a place of fulfillment and purpose in her nursing career.

The trials she encountered, from questioning her values to facing rejection letters, only served to strengthen her resolve.

Through the guidance of Marie Peppers’ course and her unwavering commitment, Brynne not only found her way but also discovered a newfound sense of well-being, both mentally and physically. Her experience reminds us that sometimes, the most rewarding chapters of our lives emerge from the darkest moments.
